What it is

Atlas is a local-first file manager for Windows 10/11, written in Rust on top of GPUI. It renders the interface on the GPU, so large directories stay responsive, and keeps file operations on the local machine.

The app targets people who spend a lot of time moving between folders: it offers Grid, List, Details, Miller-column and Tree views, tabs, split panes with drag and drop, a command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P), fuzzy folder jumping (Ctrl+K), indexed search, Space-bar previews for images, video, audio, documents, code and archives, and browsing of ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR without extraction. It can also convert images, video, audio and documents locally, and connect to SMB, FTP, WebDAV, Google Drive and OneDrive through the sidebar.

Atlas is in free alpha. The source is AGPL-3.0-or-later, while an optional one-time Premium license lifts limits on panes, profiles, cloud connections, conversions and batch rename.

Install and run

The recommended route is the Microsoft Store listing, which installs the free build and handles updates automatically. The project website carries release notes, the Windows/Linux status and a Linux waitlist.

To build from source on Windows 10/11, install the Visual Studio Build Tools with the Windows SDK and Rust; the pinned toolchain in rust-toolchain.toml is selected automatically by cargo.

git clone https://github.com/neondeex/atlas-filemanager.git
cd atlas-filemanager

cargo run --release # run Atlas
cargo check --workspace # type-check everything
cargo test --workspace # run the tests

The first build compiles GPUI and takes a while. Build aliases are in .cargo/config.toml; the Free-edition limits can be reproduced via the build editions guide.

Constraints

  • Windows 10/11 only for now; a Linux build is in development and macOS is planned, so other platforms cannot run it yet.
  • The project labels itself alpha, so rough edges and rapid changes should be expected.
  • Local conversion, search indexing and previews run on the PC; cloud and network sources require configuring the corresponding provider or rclone connection.
  • Building requires the MSVC toolchain and Windows SDK, not just Rust.
  • The AGPL-3.0-or-later license covers the code; the Atlas name and logo are excluded.

Repository layout

The workspace is split into atlas-model (shared types and state), atlas-core (filesystem, search, preview, conversion, archives, cloud), atlas-ui (the GPUI app), atlas-win-space (disk-space and cleanup), atlas-search-service (background index), plus extensions/ and patched GPUI forks under vendor/. Dependency rules are documented in ARCHITECTURE.md, and extension authors should start from docs/extensions.md.

HotRepo's take

The repository appeared in HotRepo's new-project Rust list on 2026-11-05 with 109 stars and 6 forks, gaining 3 stars in the observed one-hour window after earlier sampling at 106. That is a very short record: it establishes that the project attracted attention on its first day, not that it sustains it. The interesting fact for readers is the shape of the project itself—a real Rust/GPUI workspace with a documented architecture, extension system and build instructions, rather than a landing page—so the alpha label and Windows-only scope are the main things to weigh before adopting it.
