Lowers online game ping by racing relay paths for game UDP traffic, and reports when routing cannot help.

What Detour does

Detour is a Windows tool for online gamers who want a lower ping and fewer lag spikes. It watches for a supported game executable, learns that game's server from live UDP traffic, and compares the direct path against relay paths every 5 seconds. Only the game's UDP traffic to that server is sent through the selected path; the game's login, browsers, Discord and downloads continue normally, so it is not a VPN and does not conceal your IP. The project is open source under MIT, with a desktop app and a relay written in Rust.

Supported games are listed in games.toml. When your Wi-Fi, bufferbloat or background downloads are the cause, or when a game (CS2, Dota 2, Deadlock) already uses Valve's relay network, Detour reports that no better path helps and stays off rather than showing a promised percentage.

Quick start

  1. Download the portable Windows 10/11 x64 build from the latest release. It is a single executable with no installer and no administrator rights needed to launch.
  2. Start Detour, then start your game; Detour detects it automatically. Press Lower my ping and play.

The build is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on first launch; choose More info, then Run anyway.

Output for the demo shown in the project: VALORANT ping to Paris drops from 74 ms to 46 ms via a Frankfurt path, with lag spikes reduced from 11 per minute to none in the shown comparison.

To run your own relay, the Paths sheet offers a three-step setup that deploys relay/cloud-init.yaml to Oracle Cloud's Always Free Ampere A1 Arm tier. Alternatively use the signed community relay list in relays.toml.

Build from source

You need Rust 1.85 or newer, plus the Tauri prerequisites for the desktop app. Clone the repository, then build and test:

git clone https://github.com/ShineFinancialStrut/game-server-route-racer.git
cd detour
cargo test --workspace
cargo build --release -p detour-relay # the relay, for any OS
cargo tauri build # the desktop app

The core path scoring, multipath de-duplication, relay rules and verdict logic live in crates/detour-core; crates/detour-relay is the relay; app/ is the desktop window.

Usage constraints

  • The desktop app targets Windows 10 and 11 x64 only. The relay can be built for any OS.
  • Adding the Wintun adapter requires administrator rights, so Detour asks for elevation.
  • Multipath sends every packet twice, adding roughly 13 kB/s upstream for VALORANT, visible under Show details.
  • The app has no account, ads or telemetry. Game packets go only to relays on the chosen path, and the app downloads the signed community relay list.
  • Whether a game's rules permit routing services is decided by the publisher; Detour injects nothing, reads no game memory and changes no game files, but the project cannot guarantee the outcome.
  • Community relays are constrained to UDP toward one registered game-server address, rate-limited, and refuse private addresses and ports below 1024, so they are not open proxies.
  • Running your own relay requires an Oracle Cloud account, including card verification at sign-up; free Arm capacity can be unavailable in busy regions, with automatic retries. Always Free resources remain free after the trial.

HotRepo's take

On the HotRepo new-project list for Rust on 2026-11-01, the repository recorded 111 stars and 8 forks, all counted as growth since creation under that list's average-daily metric. That is a single snapshot with no GitHub all-language daily rank recorded, so it does not establish a trend. What stands out technically is the honest-verdict design: checks for Wi-Fi and bufferbloat before trying paths, and staying off for games that already use Valve's relay network, which gives this ping optimizer a more specific role than a blanket VPN-style tunnel.
